CRM1988
Just changed serpentine belt on my 88 MJ I6 no problems before except belt needed changed. Started squeaking after the belt was changed, tried tightening but still squeaking. Changed the idler pulley but didn't get rid of the mouse under the hood. Any suggestions would be appreciated. sinkrun
Goodyear gatorback belts are the best fix everything else seems to chirp or squeek.
buckwheat
Make sure to look at your harmonic balancer. The rubber inner ring likes to disintegrate which causes it to wobble and creates sounds + eats belts. Also make sure to check for any coolant or oil leaks. If that stuff is dripping onto the belt it can cause lots of noise.
gogmorgo
Harmonic balancer x2. I had one start going bad, the rubber between the pulley and the inner part started coming apart, and the pulley developed a small wobble that was enough to smack the belt into the timing cover. The alternating squeak that resulted was the belt slowly sawing through the timing cover.
johnj92131
Noticed some squeaking just started in the last 5 days. Guess I need to look at the balancer also. Both the water pump and the belt are a few months old.
