kroyusa
I just discovered I have a D44 in my rig. When I ordered it back in 89 I selected the towing package along with Limited Slip. Pretty sure it has 3.08 gearing as it's a 4.0 2WD. I've read that I may be able to add a set of thick 4.10 gears, any recommendations on which brand of gears to use? Thanks. Marine1Texas
My D44 just had to regear front and back on my 87 mj, I chipped a tooth on my 3.31. I used Yukon and went with 4.10. the price was not bad at all. just making sure it works out right can take some time to setup. I went with OEM style open carrier Yukon. It needed carrier and new spider gears. www.RWKHausSupply.com is a good place to buy
INjake89mj
Yes, you can use a thick cut gear and keep your LS carrier. I just did this to mine a couple weeks ago. I went with Yukon gears as well. Watch out though, some say thick cut TJ gears, because they use bigger ring gear bolts. you can use these, but will require bigger bolts and drilling out your carrier.

HOrnbrod
I also used Yukon thick gears when going from 3.55 to 4.10 along with a Trac Lok diff from a Honda Passport. Didn't have any problem with the bigger TJ bolts though, have never heard of that. AFAIK the TJ D44 is the same as an MJ D44 internally.

Eagle
Putting in an Ax-15. Thanks for the replies! But what transmission do you have NOW? That's what determines the existing gear ratio. [Edit] Never mind. Just realized the carrier break for the Dana 44 is from 3.73 to 3.92, so you would have the same carrier regardless of whether your axle is 3.08 or 3.55. INjake89mj
AFAIK the TJ D44 is the same as an MJ D44 internally. Just the TJ Rubicon axles used the larger 7/16" ring gear bolts. Should have been more clear.
