Keyav8r
Looking for the OEM part number for the AC evaporator for a 91 MJ. Got mine out (finally) and found one spot with dye showing but several traces of dye in the housing. I'm hoping Crown has a replacement that has provision (a hole through the end plate and fins) for the thermostatic probe. Rock Auto's evaporator description says it does not have the hole. big66440
If you end up finding one with the hole please let me know,I got a few different ones from Rock auto and none of them had it.I'm thinking of pulling one from the junkyard and having it flushed. Keyav8r
big66440 - I may have to go the JY route. I've looked at several websites (including Crown Automotive) and they are showing a different design for the PN that does not have the mounting flames on the ends or the hole. Don't want to buy an evaporator that doesn't fit and not be able to return it. There is a 91 XJ in the local JY that has the correct evaporator. If I can find a way to leak test it I may go pull it. Fernando87mj
Is it possible to try to make that hole in the new evaporator? Or would that ruin it ? Just curious since I want to replace mines to.

It was not possible at all without puncturing the "tubes" on the one evaporator I got that actually fit the heater box, the second one I got didn't fit in the box at all. Keyav8r
Went the JY route. Got an evaporator from a 91 XJ with the hole for the thermostat, thermocouple thingy, and the thingy even though someone had cut the wires instead of disconnecting at the connector. Got all four hoses and they look better than mine. Also got a whole gasket in good condition for the blower motor where it fits through the firewall. I'll pressure test everything and return any bad parts for "store credit". Total cost $75. New parts (if I could find the correct evaporator) would have been around $200. A little soap, water and elbow grease and they'll look like, well, used (but working) parts. I also found a neat little cover that fits over the vacuum solenoids in the passenger footwell. And, of course, got all the associated fasteners, including the plastic inserts in the header panel for the screws that attach the grille. A couple of mine have oversized screws in them that will be corrected when I put the front end back on. I'm pretty sure the re-assembly will take much longer than the tear down.
