So I'm swapping a 92' 4.0 HO in place of my 90' 4.0 with a complete parts vehicle, also swapping to a dakota fuel tank. My question is though, why exactly do I have to splice into the rear of the MJ harness instead of just keep the entire XJ harness? Also I have the link for the write up on how to splice just curious why, Thanks!

I did something like this, 94XJ to 87MJ electrical.

I cut the factory XJ rear harness, and made my own. I bought new light sockets, although the used ones would work just fine.

First, the XJ is shorter than the MJ, so the XJ harness isn't long enough to reach your taillights.

Second, the XJ uses amber lights in the rear as dedicated turn/hazard lamps. The taillights and brake lights are completely separate from the turns and hazards. On the MJ, all functions in the rear use the same lamps, so the wiring is obviously different.
