1986, 2.8 replaced with 3.4 (95 camaro)

Recommended Posts

Hi I need some help,  I have a complete 1986 with a bad 2.8 and a 904 auto.  I have a massaged 3.4 (95 camaro) sitting on a stand.  WILL the 904 bolt up/work with the 3.4, I am hoping its a straight inspect/cleaning and bolt it in.  Any info will be a great help.  Jeff

Short answer:  Count the bolts on the bellhousing - check there position on the 2.8 V6    Check the 3.4 on your engine stand.  Compare the 2 bolt patterns.  Report what you find.

My guess is you will find the same holes on the back of both engines - you bell housing matches the GM v6 pattern.  The 3.4 is a drop in replacement for the 2.8

Use the search function to research this swap.  It has been done many times before.  The search function on the ComancheClub is not the greatest sometimes.  So search with Google.

Google is your friend for so many things.

Welcome to the club.  There really is a wealth of information posted here.  For the DYI sections - there is an index pinned that has links to just about any DYI project for the Comanche you can imagine and a few that I have never even thought about also.

Here is the first thing I found using search here on the ComancheClub:

Follow that link and the other links in that thread.  It will lead you to a full conversion that has been done by a CC member.  Good Luck.

I swaped in a 3.4 behind my ax5 , it's mostly a direct bolt in swap . The 3.4 will bolt up to the 904 however the 3.4 is internally balanced and the 2.8 is externaly balanced so you will need to source the proper flywheel to match the 3.4 which shouldn't be that hard.
