Push? My 1988 MJ columns all require a pull to click to engage the hi-beams. Pull once till you hear/feel the click for Hi, once again for Lo.

Now, my 2000 XJ is a push HI/pull LO switch but the columns are nothing alike.

the lever pushes a rod that runs down the steering column to the high beam switch.  check it for binding.

ok so i see a rod goin dow the column to a switch which when i pull on the lever the rod depresses the switch and I'm guess it should click but pulling the lever alone doesnt press it hard enough for it to click but when i use my finger to press it and also pull on the lever i can hear it clicking but the next thing is that when it clicks the headlights go off so i rellay don't know what to make of this

So, just to clarify, the headlights work right? The hi bulbs aren't burned out or vice versa? Does it have a relay harness installed? If so, are the relays still good?

What is the condition of the headlight switch? How about the column wiring ... or even more so ... the condition of the bulkhead connector in front of the air cleaner box? Does the front harness still have a grounding point that is good?

There is also the possibility the switch itself is futzed. try cleaning it and test voltage to, and out of the switch.

Rockfrog you were right its pull to click between high and low beam but i guess it got stuck from sitting for so long so after a dose of wd40 and pressing that switch under the steering column a few times it works now high and low beam thanks guys once again for all the help...
