Fuel tank swap?

Recommended Posts

Local salvave yard has a 92 20 gal cherokee tank. Can I asume there the same as my 88 mj 113 wheel base? they say it will fit an has only 100k on it 50 bucks with the pump. my straps an old roll over valves are out an in good shape still from the old tank.

Ha. Not even close to fitting. Napa tried to do that to me once, only they didn't even have the decency to tell me they decided they could substitute an XJ tank when they couldn't find an MJ one.

I've got a pic of the two side by side that I'll post when I get home.
The fuel sender and pump will be different as well, although the pump itself is an HO vs Renix thing so will be the same as a '92 MJ pump. The fuel sending unit is similar between XJ and MJ, but they're the mirror image of each other so don't work out so well.

Mike, This will fit just like a square peg in a round hole.  Buy a new tank on Ebay for about $100.  Why would anyone want a 25 year old tank with rust on the bottom for any price, even if it did fit?

The tank wasnt rused through like i had thought the rubber ring was super crispy under the bench seat in mopar plastic was a new one. Whats that chances? Any ways scrubed the rust off the tank sprayed some shaker primer an enamel sprayed got get it back in but the fuel lines are fuel but one clearly says not for injection.

I'm glad you got it all figured out.

Now as a side note (not trying to be an a$$): Could you please use periods, spaces, and capital letters. I had a very hard time reading your last post. In fact I am not sure I understood it all.

Ok I am new to the MJ world (3 weeks) and admittedly have only gassed up 2 times in my 92 Eliminator. Both times it seemed closer to 10 gallons than anything else. It's a short bed if that matters. Is my gauge bad or wrong? This is my first post, props to an awesome website and helpful members. And yes this sent from my phone....

I post almost exclusively from my phone. Not sure how it's relevant to anything, but sure.

There were three tank sizes, 16- and 23-gal for the long beds and 18-gal for the short. In '91 they discontinued the 16-gal, but it's a 24-year old truck so who knows what's happened.

How much it takes to fill is inversely proportional to how much fuel is left in the tank. As to trusting the gauge, it's 24 years old... Would you have 100% faith in anything else that old? I'm also not sure what whoever determined the capacity took for a "full" mark. I once put 25 gallons into my 23-gal tank...
