98 Head, Intake, and PS Swap?

Recommended Posts

Hello again! I have ended up with a very clean 98 4.0 Head, Intake, and ZJ PS pump for free as they were leftover parts from helping my friend swap his block that spun a bearing on our way to the York Jeep Show.

(Even with the spun bearing it still got us there and then to friends garage after.)

But my question is, how hard and how worth it would it be to swap these parts on my truck?

I could've sworn I had seen thread or two about similar conversions but can't seem to find any now.

Let me know what you guys think!

The first question I have is there something wrong with the engine in your 89?  If nothing is wrong with your 89 - why do you want to swap the head?  Because it is an H.O. head and you want the extra 14 horsepower at the top end?  If the truck runs fine, I would not waste my time. Too much work for not much results.   Now, hang on to the head and manifold for when you come up with another block and a 4.2 crank or spend $400 for a new crank and build a stroker.

My truck runs alright currently.

I was just getting a plan together incase it changes it's mind about that..

I figured between the newer head, the better flowing intake, and the supposedly better ZJ pump it would be a decent upgrade.

Also I could then put a better aftermarket header on it too.

The 98 head (0630), intake, and PS pump will also require an adapter for the 89's TPS to mount to the 98 throttle body. Easy enough to do. A new location for the dash Guage temp sender will also need to be addressed.

You will also require a new belt for the different routing.

And a newer fuel rail from a 91-95 4.0 to be able to adapt the fuel system to the Renix system.

The newer (96 up) tensioner design alone is worth the swap in my books.

The 98 ZJ pump is the same as a 98 XJ pump so other than being newer, not that different. You're thinking 99+ Grands (WJ) pump as better.

I did similar to my 88 ... I used a 92 head, 00 intake, 94 TB and exhaust (not that they are different), 94 fuel rail, and 92 thermostat housing (as I also moved the CTS to the thermostat housing).

My build thread has some details and pictures on it. I had to replace my head anyway so for me it was a no brainer.

Would I do it all to a perfectly fine running motor ... Not likely, but I was already down to the block.

Butt dyno says ... worn out (mirror like cylinder walls) motor more peppier, still gets 18mpg avg (between city/hwy) on JK 32's and stock 3.07's. I plan to pop in a middle aged block shortly (but the damn thing is an energizer bunny, but sounds like a gravel truck) and keep the Frankenstein combination going which should pep it up more. The new block even still has cross hatching ... Yay!

Oh, the life of a 4.0L.
