manche_mane
it's been a while since i've been on here or tinkered with my 90, so I'm a little confused about how i should go about finishing my project... currently, my mj is still 2wd, 4.0 it is on full width 44/60s (passenger side drop) i bought a dana300 t case from a guy on craigslist, and it is connected to a b/w t5 (he gave it to me, said it was from his yj or tj...i can't remember) i don't want to manual swap it. i know i will need an adapter to use the dana 300 i found an aw4 from a 98 grand cherokee i guess my question is can i use my 90 harness with the 98 and still drive it regardlesss if the speedo works? or should i keep looking for an old aw4? any other things i will run into if my aw4/dana300 setup goes together? (i know ill need to figure out the front d/s) thanks in advance for any help, if any
Incommando
I did this using a '91 AW4 and a d300. If it helps I bought the adapter from a guy in the Cherokee section of Pirate. You might look for that as it was only $50 a few years ago and it worked fine. If it helps you figure out what d300 you have jeep only used them in '80-'86 CJ's. I am about 70% sure they are all the same

Strokermjcomanche
A 98 grand cherokee should have a 42re trans behind a 4.0 . Sure it's a aw4?
Eagle
i found an aw4 from a 98 grand cherokee No you didn't. The '98 Grand Cherokee didn't have the AW4. The Chrysler 42RE replaced the AW4 midyear in the 1993 production run.
manche_mane
Oh....well good thing I said I'll pass. Guess I got some more reading to do. Another person said they have a 98 xj aw4. But he must have know much as I, the differences between the newer and older models. Ima just look on Craigslist and maybe eBay for a 90ish aw4
Strokermjcomanche
An XJ is a small cherokee and a Zj is a 93-98 grand cherokee . The aw4 was offered in the 98 Xj, but I believe the newer aw4 and the older transmission control module TCM would not work together . Sticking with the same era transmission parts would be the easiest way to go IMO .

manche_mane
Ya...I kinda figured Lol. Thanks. Guy #1 still thinks he has a 98 aw4. Guy #2 knows he has a 98 aw4 I never did research on the grands, because I thought it was just a bigger body and blah.. I really appreciate the correction. I'm going to wait for a relative tranny. Dad is going to have to put up with the space I take in his yard for now lol
