I have a 90 2.5 2wd with a 4sp in it and I have to change out the clutch but I found a 5speed transmission for $100. The 5sp is out of an 89 4.0 2wd. So since I already have to drop the tranny I thought I might as well swap my 4sp for the 5sp but was wondering if anyone knows if it will/will not bolt up? And maybe warn me about some problem areas I might encounter in the process. Thanks Guys!

You have to see if it is a AX5, AX-15, BA-10/5 or did it come off a later or new jeep! If it is AX5 or BA-10/5 you maybe in luck! If it is the AX-15 you need another bellhousing. Your looking at a speedo gear change as well since rear end gearing going to be different. also drivesharft. I think best bet to stay with what you have

The AX4 and AX5 are physically identical and will bolt up.

The gearing is different though from what I understand. I have only had the AX5 and those came with 4.10 gears in the differentials.

The AX15 that came behind the 4.0s will not bolt up.

IF you could find a bell housing to mate the ax15 to the 2.5 you'll also most likely need a different rear driveshaft as well. The bell housing is super rare only found in Dodge Dakotas. Assuming you have 3:55 gears with the 4 speed. Without changing to 4:10 rear axle your fifth gear in an ax5 might not be much use. Just keep the 4 speed and keep on trucking.
