88mjblue
88 mj with the Peugeot BA 10/5 + NP231 here, beginning the process of swapping in the ax15. I found an AX15 for sale from a 93 ZJ, but does anyone know of any differences in the AX15's that went into the ZJ's? Also, the guy says it has an external slave, but I thought those didn't arrive till 94? It doesn't have the transfer case with it, so should I also be looking for an np231 from an xj that has the 23 spline?
Crash
1993 was the only year the ZJ had a manual trans option, rare at that. Will have 23-spl output. Just because they released the ext slave ax-15 in the XJ in 1994, does not mean it did not already exist prior. The AX-15 was only available behind the 4.0L in the ZJ, so it's plug n pray. Find a matching spline T-case and go for it.
88mjblue
Are all AX-15's 23 spline output?
mnkyboy
They are all 23 spline output, also mid89-91 have a .590 input and 92 up are .750 so you would need to source the correct pilot bushing/bearing for which ever AX15 you go with. a bushing for a 70s CJ5 with a 304 fits the larger input, the smaller input should b the same as the BA10/
88mjblue
Thanks, I'll put that on my list. Can anyone give me some advice on purchasing a used transmission? I've never done this before, so what are the things to look out for, questions to ask, or how can I test it for wear/smoothness - just shifting it? Also, what additional parts should I make sure I get when I pick up this transmission from the seller?
87MJTIM
Ask what year and model the AX15 came out from. The 94+ AX15 comes with the external slave. Also, the 94+ input tip has smaller diameter. It will require changing the pilot bushing. If you do go to external, you may need/want to change the clutch while your in there. Ask what happenned the vehicle it came out from. Was is wrecked or did it just die. If it was wrecked, chances are it was being driven and operating at the time. If it died, who knows why it died. This is not a guarentee it is good, but the odds are in your favor if was operational. Make sure it has the bellhousing, backup light switch and shifter.
