project88mj
does the 4wd have limited slip rear axles or not?
DirtyComanche
Optionally. I don't know what option package got them, or what they're avaliable in or w/e. But they were avaliable.
JeepcoMJ
yes and no...basically it was an option on the REAR end only, but isn't common. i believe that was just the chrysler rear end too...but not certain. you can get lsd out of a cherokee if you find one equpped with that and put it in a comanche
project88mj
how do i find limited slip i need it i olny got 2wd is there a locker or spool or even a different axle for cheap ?
DirtyComanche
Spools are cheap, like under $200 cheap. Mini-spools are way less. Not street friendly though. Aussie, lock-right, quik-loc and whatever those other lunchbox lockers are can all be had for about $250. Full case lockers are a lot more. HD LS/posi are avaliable too. And factory LS/posi can be sourced from junkyards for cheap. You can get a factory LS for the D30 front too - just not from a jeep. What axle is it? If it is a D35 it's a bad idea to add a traction aid - it probably will go kabloowy.
project88mj
it is a d35... what need to look for to find a LS/ posi d35 in jeeps at junkyards?
JeepcoMJ
it is a d35... what need to look for to find a LS/ posi d35 in jeeps at junkyards? doing that to a dana 35 is a moot idea, it WILL blow up eventually, sooner than later. wait on the upgrade, get a nice chrysler 8.25 out of a cherokee (they're cheap) or do an 8.8 or a dana 44 swap. project88mj
? what?
DirtyComanche
You'll have to cut off the old spring perches and weld on some new ones. Cherokees are spring over, comaches spring under, and the centre lines are different by about 5/8" or something.
mjcanoe
project88mj, d35's & d44's did come w/lsd as an option for your year/model. the easiest way to verify if it is one is by the extra tag on the diff cover. it is short, attached by 1 bolt, usually @ the 10:00 position. it warned you needed additive. sometimes last person who had cover off failed to put tag back. next step would be to jack up rear end & spin tires/hub forward, if lsd both will turn forward while you have someone place resistance on opposite side. standard d35 or d44 will have opposite side spin opposite direction. hope you find one. d44 is stronger, but my '86 still runs a d35,only problem i've ever had was blowing up spider gears while i ran 3.55 ratio & 32" tires & thrashing it on the streets. changed to 4.10, no more problems. mjcanoe
Eagle
The factory limited slip for the D35, D44, and Chrysler 8.25 was the Dana Trac-Lok. It's a clutch-type limited slip, and if you find one in a junkyard you should assume that it will need to be rebuilt, so factor that into the cost of a junkyard axle. For an old MJ with 2WD, I think I'd just throw in a lunchbox locker and drive it 'til it breaks. The Dana 35 is fine for street use unless you abuse it (although it does sorta sound like you're planning to abuse it).
