gauges upgrades

Recommended Posts

Let me elaborate. There is two types of gauges. Mechanical and electrical. Thee mechanical gauge has a tubing connected to the oil passage and gauge. The electrical gauge has a sending unit screwed into the oil passage and is connected to the gauge by a length of wire.

Easiest/Cheapest. Grab the gauge cluster and the sensors you need from an XJ at the junkyard. IIRC you need a Renix set if you have a Renix truck and a OBD1 if you have OBD1. You need the sender located by the oil filter for the oil pressure. The one for temp is located on the rear of the head on the driver's side. It is very small. It is not the large sender by the thermostat. Get these from the donor vehicle as well as they are rarely go bad. From there it is plug and play.

If you have an automatic MJ keep in mind that most XJ's are floor shift while MJ's are column shift. Using a gauge cluster from a floor shift jeep will mean you lose your gear indicator in the dash. I have never found it to be an issue but you can search for the harder to find and usually more expensive MJ full gauge cluster from an auto MJ if it bothers you.

Is there a kit I can buy

As for this there is no "kit" to swap the gauges by replacing the original lights. If you want to add additional gauges it is as easy as buying the gauges you want in a 2 or 3 gauge set or even individually and installing them where ever you want them. Such kits are available from your local McAuto parts place or places like Summitracing.com or jegs.com.

The cluster swap is the best "kit" you can buy.  It is plug and play.  Just get the correct one for your MJ from the same year/engine XJ.  No muss, no fuss.  It just works.

:agree:  I wanted to do a complete " custom"  gauge cluster set up on my MJ, but after figuring out the cost I was discouraged I went the route everyone on here recommends and I am happy. To answer your original question though, no there's no one that makes a readily available kit. ( at least that I know of)
