Roost426
Hey guys, I recently developed a noise/vibration that seems to be coming from the passenger side front tire area. I swapped tires front to back to rule out an out of balance tire/bent rim and my tires are close to new anyways. My buddy and I seem to be thinking it is either a wheel bearing or the U Joint. When I get to about 40 mph you can start to hear a noise, and while turning it seems to increase the noise and I can feel some pulsating/shimmying through the steering wheel, and even the whole truck seems to vibrate some what, not super violently but it is there. Also it seems to be worse/louder when I turn right, which is actually unloading the weight off of the suspected area. When I jack up the front that wheel does not seem to have any wiggle in the 12/6 vertical position, which I had heard wiggle here would be indictive of a wheel bearing. Any other ways I can trouble shoot to try and single out what the issue is? Else wise I will just bite the bullet and go with new wheel bearings and U joints for the front axles. Arizona Duffer
Last week, same wheel, hub went out. First notice was "electrical" smell inside cab. Beerother did it smoke.
Jeep Driver
New Ujoints will cost you about $25-30 and will not harm you to replace them anyway. It will take you about two hours to replace. I'd start there. If the problem persists, then off to the unit bearing which will cost you about $200. I start cheapest first and then move on, when unsure. wvzj
I would just replace both since you will have the unit bearing off anyway when replacing the u joint. A good Timken bearing can be had for $75 on Rock Auto.
