Bacon
i have the chance to pick up a V8 93 ZJ with a 3" lift for cheap, as it has front end damage. i was thinking maybe buy it, put the lift under my ZJ, and throw the engine/trans/tcase into the manche. anybody here ever put a 5.2 out of a ZJ (or anything else i suppose) into a manche? if not, do you know of any good tech threads out there for the swap I'm just thinking about it at this point, i wanna do some research before i do it. thoughts? feerocknok
Awhile back someone was trying to drop a carbed 360 (5.9) into one, but he was having difficulties with the stock exhaust manifolds. It caused the motor to be far above the frame rails and started causing other issues. I don't know what the ZJ manifolds are like, but there's a good chance you'll need to have custom headers built. rejeep
i have actually seen this done in an XJ.. I need to find the link.. so if it can be done in an XJ why not an MJ..
pingpong
The Mj and zj are essentially the same from the x-member forward, there are minor differences, but the same, I don't see why you couldn't just take everything and swap it over. Might take a lil fabbing here and there, but would be very doable
JeepcoMJ
making custom headers is NOT that hard. I put the camaro engine in my truck...that required custom mounts, headers, header panel, intake, bellhousing (some notching to fit the starter in), y-pipe, wiring, and hoses. but i got'r'done pretty easy and it works like a charm...most of the time (some wiring gremlins...well, 1 and i've found the source :D)
mjcanoe
I considered swapping in a 304 or 360 AMC on my '86 mj after i yanked 2.5l, but chose not to after doing mock-up. had clearance issues @ firewall i did not want to deal with. but, as we've often heard, you can do anything w/ enough time & $. exhaust & f/wall clearance will be biggest issues as i recall. mjcanoe
pingpong
I am preeping to swap in a 4.3 and the way I look at it.... If I have firewall problems I can move the engine forward :smart: No matter how you look at it... I6 motors are just physically bigger then a v-8 or a v-6 :smart: I am sure this is becoming a popular swap as well, so check with Advance Adapters or Novak Conversions. Also some lurking on Pirate might yield some good answers.. Just ask politely through a PM if they can give you any help.... ask in an open forum and get flamed. I would start checking in the jeep non hardcore/newbie then go to the jeep hardcore section, or the Cherokee group section
mjcanoe
pingpong, 4.3l sounds like good swap. my problem was that since i did not want to swap frt. header panel from '86 to later model lenght was an issue for me. the width of the AMC v-8 put it to far forward, tho well ahead of the indentation of firewall for 4.0l. left me no room for rad. i used a early '70's h/d rad. out of a 302ci comet. plus i tend to be a "purist", wanting oem if at all possible. mjcanoe
