A Comanche Build.. The story of a dead XJ..

Recommended Posts

About a year ago I bought my first Jeep.. 94' Cherokee Sport. I fell in love this thing and it was in alright condition for the $1500 I paid for it.

Everything was dandy until this happened...

I was installing my new 3" lift and was trying to break the rear shackle bolt loose and the frame completely let go right there.. I could repair it but for some other areas in the frame it wasn't worth it to me.. Then I stumbled upon this..

90' sport 2.5 2wd.  So I will be doing the classic HO 4wd swap. Got a new heater for the shop so after that's installed and we clean up a bit I'm going to town on her. Sad about my XJ but it'll live on.. somewhat.

Where did you find that one? Looks awfully familiar.  :hmm: Did it happen to not have a tailgate? I looked at a '90 a couple years ago that was in just about the same shape and the guy selling it had plans of putting a diesel (I think) in it.

Edit... just saw your wanted ad for the tailgate. I think I know your truck... I think I was the guy who took your tailgate too.  :rotf:

Hmm... I distinctly remember the tailgate being the worst looking panel on the truck... if it's the same truck, anyhow. Does the truck look like it's had a respray? Do you know the history of the truck as far as where it came from?

Def has not been resprayed, 122k original miles. First owner lived in brookfield, wi, second week n Pewaukee and now me in Waukesha. Stayed local its whole life. It was running and driving until last February when the 2.5 pooped out

Well I started working on the gauges today. I wish the odometers were closer.. The MJ is at 122041 and the XJ is at 169701 by whatever it'll run forever either way

Pictar time

The xj cluster originally had a great bezel but I like the black more so I'm going to drill the whole for the trip reset

Pulled an all nighter last night and had so much fun and made so much progress. Found some uh oh areas but got them taken care of and now the rig is ready for all the xj donor parts

The rust we found. First spot was under the battery tray. That ties into the spring perch so I wanted that fixed.

Fixed

Next, of course, was the floor pans. They weren't bad so we just threw some patches on there.

Mostly just surface scale. Beat around with a hammer and cut out the bad stuff

I have to finish up the welds on the drivers side and paint it. Under side of both sides needs to be ground down as well. Going to prime, seal, then bed line the bottom of the cab.

The front x member had been damaged to so that was pulled and hammered and reinforced. Hence the large c clamp lol

Next week the xj gets the tear down then to the scrap yard with her

And if anyone has a clean red dash let me know.. Mine has sun damage.

Not huge progress but got all of the harness pulled off the fine last night in the xj, got the dash out and the interior harness pulled. Let me tell you.. Every time I do something like that I never understand why engineers make $#!& so difficult but whatever

Are you leaving the harness attached to the back to the dash?... way easier to move the whole thing over as a unit.

I did partially. Looking back it would have been easier to leave it attached completely, but its getting swapped to a different dash anyway so it had to come off.

My buddy scrapped a ZJ today and I stole the booster off it quick before that so now I can justify getting rid of the load sensing valve in the rear. I ordered some of the metal tow mirror looking mirrors yesterday as well.  have done some work recently just no pictars.. just reassembly at this point. will have pics next go round!
