zfinger
I've got a 90' MJ about to get a full 00' swap and I came across another hick-up. I'm swapping in the 00' motor and automatic transmission. My 90' t-case already has a SYE kit in it. I don't have the 00' t-case. Going 90' AX-15 to a 00' AW4. So its a 231 with the 21 spline input gear. It'll need to be a 23 spline. What are my options? Can I buy the 23 spline piece I need and swap it out in the t-case? Jeepman
Your 1990 AX15 should be a 23 spline already so it should be a direct bolt on...
Blue XJ
I picked up a 23 spline input for mine on another forum for $50 shipped. There is a change to the case in 94 i think, there is a thick and thin input bearing design, make sure you get a gear that matches yours.

I've been doing some more reading and it appears you should be right. AX15 - 23 spline AW4 pre-91 - 21 spline AW4 post-91 - 23 spline
jpnjim
Sounds like you already have the 23 spline, but be careful if you do end up changing input gears, there was some kind of a pitch change, or two over the years, and you will know immediately if you have an incompatible gear. Wrong input = sounds like rocks in a blender

zfinger
The internet didn't lie to me! Bolted right up! 00' AW4 will bolt to a 90' 231 off an AX-
Blue XJ
Does the input gear engage properly? There were 3 different length input gears over the years, just make sure yours engages enough to the output on the trans.
zfinger
80 Miles into the road test now, and yes, it works! 4wd works great so the spline lengths must have been fine.
