Wrz
About 2 weeks about my jeep started to sputter when driving, check the plugs and had one that lost contact. Fixed This last week the jeep runs rough when first started and sounds like it has a miss, it boggs and sputters when trying to acellerate, and just when i feel its starting to run a little better it will randomly stall while doing 25, 50mph ect . Jeeps deffently running way to rich and i am now getting maybe 3-4mpg. After it stalls it will take a few minutes of cranking to finally start When running decent it will accelerate, but u can feel it tugging trying to get power I have a constant 30psi at the fuel rail when running ruff so far ive changed the following 4 spark plugs ( autolite gapped at 35 ) bosch spark plug wires tps sensor( adjusted also ) new cps map sensor Ive checked all the wires for breaks, and all the hoses are good with no cracks ect i am now at a standstill and do not know what to check next motor specs- 1990 block, 1995 xj head, 2000 xj intake manifold ect any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated thanks
Timeless
Check/change the distributor cap and rotor or atleast make sure you are getting spark to all 6 wires/plugs. You might as well change all the plugs while you're at it too. They're cheap enough.
88whitemanche
I know you said you checked for wires... Did you check for grounds? Looseness? Double check rear taillight ground sometimes the crimps to the ground loosen up.... Also have you changed your O2 sensor?
Wrz
hey i checked all the grounds in the engine bay, ill have to double check the one behind the tail light. I installed a new o2 sensor when i had my exhaust installed, less then 5k ago.
Wrz
timeless- changed all the plugs, wires, and cap last week with no difference. i also unplugged the distributor to see if it was the stator going bad with no difference
mvusse
Autolite plugs are crap as are Bosch; don't know about Bosch wires. NGK copper is pretty good. For a cheaper option, Champion coppers seem to work good also with our engines.
Timeless
That new o2 sensor might have taken a dump. I think it can be checked with a multimeter. Check the wires to/from it too.
mvusse
Make sure you use a digital multimeter. Analog ones have too low an impedance and will fry the sensor.
Wrz
Small updates- changed o2 sensor and that fixed the random stall and for the most part mis fire i was having at start up After i swapped that my idle would not go down under 1500 under any conditions Bought a new iac sensor ( for an ho since advance did no stock one for my renix ) seems to have fixed the idle, but still surges to around 1200-1500 randomly still runs to lean from the exhaust smell I'm getting will update as more progress is made
teamsmith
Have you checked your injectors? I had similar symptoms (bad mpg, misfire, rough idle, slow start, poor accelartion) and traced it to a leaking injector, which also explained the raw fuel smell. Wrz
Have you checked your injectors? Just saw this post now and decided to check my gauge on the fuel fail. I clicked the key forward ( did not start ) and the pressure was a 32psi. Within a few seconds the psi dropped and after a few minutes was all the way down to 0. wish i would have thought of this sooner before buying all these sensors, guess i have some spares for the future. Really appreciate it, now just have to try and get a replacement and figure which injector is the culprit.
1989 Eliminator
Well there is a "air screw" that you can play with to FINE TUNE the idle only. This shouldnt be used to completely fix the issue here. This sounds like a bad MAP like part of my issue was. I chased a rough/low/varying idle for a long time and finally solved it through everything I changed and checked. Click on my link below in my signature for my story. Lots of good information in there.

Running rich and still loosing 100miles to a tank, but I, pretty sure the injector is the cause of a few of those issues
88whitemanche
Did you check your manifold bolts?
1989 Eliminator
The air screw I talked about can settle down that idle. If you click on my link and on one of the last pages there is a good picture of it. Have your truck running and play around with it. Turn the screw in and out and observe the idle changes. Did you check your manifold bolts? I would also highly suggest this. If you have a manifold leak then you would smell exhaust (rich smelling) and the vacuum leak would cause a higher idle.
