Brake MC - Which Bowl Feeds Front / Rear?

Recommended Posts

Going to be changing out the front soft brake lines for both driver and passenger, rear, soft main brake line leading to the prop valve, and front rotors and brakes. Was curious as I thought the front (smaller) bowl on the brake master cylinder fed the fronts, but it seems I may have been mistaken.

Does the smaller bowl feed the front lines, or the rears? Not sure if later years still function the same, or if this is true for most cars on the road, IE: Not just Jeeps in general.

If it's the rears that have sprung a leak, seems new wheel cylinders are in order, that or the adjustment has fallen out of spec. Shoes still have a fair bit of meat on them, and the drums themselves are still within spec ratings. :hmm:

Ah; thanks for the solid advice all. Now I just have to find the cause of my leak in the rears. Thinking it's one of the inner seals on the MC itself. Wheel cylinders checked out ok in the back, old, but still in good shape, as did the lines going that way. There's a patch of wetness on the booster under the MC, so a rebuild might be in order soon...

for what it's worth. Been pulling parts from a '96 XJ to put on a MJ. The bowls on the brake master cylinder are the same size. It has disc front and drum rear. Never noticed or paid attention to this B4 but because of the recent discussion thought I'd mention it.

Here's an actual pic of my master and booster. I got the master on Ebay, and it's supposedly from a 95 XJ. I do know the booster is 95/96 as it was from some NOS stuff that I had. But since you are probably pulling the master directly off a 96 XJ in your herd, I wouldn't be surprised if my master were not a 95. Please post a pic up when you can Jim.
