shocks, lift, metric ton leaves. I need some advise

Recommended Posts

I've heard rumors that metric ton leaves will give me 2-3" of lift. But since they are OEM springs can I just use OEM shocks? I'd like have 3" of lift. Will metric ton leaves give me any lift or keep me at stock hight? And what shocks should I go with?

The factory metric ton package had the same ride height as the standard springs. It aoppears from reports that aftermarket "metric ton" springs ride 1" to 2" higher than standard ... which suggests that they are not really duplicates of the factory springs. (Not saying they aren't good springs, just that they aren't a duplicate of the factory equipment.) I've never heard of any "metric ton" spring that generated 3 inches of lift.

With up to 2" of lift you can generally get away with OEM shocks. At or beyond 3" you really should be looking at different shocks. Looking at Monroe data for MJ rear shocks, one model has a total travel of 8.625" and another has a total travel of 9.750". Round it to 9" f\or discussion. Under ideal conditions, the piston normally rides at mid-height, so you have 4-1/2" of compression travel and 4-1/2" of extension travel (droop). Lift the vehicle 3" and you have used up almost all the available extension. Not the end of the world, but ... not right.

Just got a set of their MT springs the other day. I will be installing them tomorrow. Will report back with data, but i will also be swapping in a chry 8.25 at the same time, so numbers will be slightly off.

Much appreciated

well I'm swapping out the original 2wd springs so I'm thinking i might get some lift. is that why you got the v8 zj coils for the front?

yes, however i bought the ones with the variable rate.  they ride very well but the extra weight of my grille guard has most of the "soft" section compressed.  I needed to get a 2" spacer to compensate, the rear is still higher and thats how i wanted it, it still looks like it has a "stockish" stance
