JeepcoMJ
can it be done without custom seals or purchasing a new seal? I understand the shift linkages will be different, and that's not a problem. will driveshafts need to be lengthened/shortened? what about the CAD vacuum lines? if i get a 231 from a disco xj will they just plug in? what spline and length input do i need? reason for this is while putting in the cruise control speedo cable yesterday, i noted some grinding noises. thought they were the cable speedo grinding...but that wasn't it. the chain is/was hella lose and actually broke apart this morning. not good i know. now i have rwd and there's not much noise from it, but i hesitate to drive it very far. I have two other np207's and one good ax5 that i need to swap into my truck...but i figured that I may as well upgrade, and install the new tranny at the same time. I will be intigrating the shift linkage assembly into the tranny, so that if i ever drop the tranny i just have to disconnect the one connector to the shifter handle. JeepcoMJ
anyone?
mjeff87
Should just bolt right in, assuming the input matches (21 spline, short). IIRC, the 207 is about 1/2" longer than the 231, not enough to matter. And the linkage is the same, or similar enough to work (?) Jeff
JeepcoMJ
any ideas on what year/model a np231 with a 21 spline short input would come from?
mjeff87
any 2.5 MJ/XJ from 87 onward, and earlier 4.0/AW4 combos (pre-91 from what I've seen). My 231 came from behind an 89 AW4. Stay away from YJ cases....some of them have long outputs vs. short but the AX5's they were bolted to had a recessed output, and they won't seal completely on an XJ/MJ tranny, plus there's barely 1/8" spline engagement. Also, 231's behind 904/909's are short, but they're 23 spline for some unknown reason  Jeff
JeepcoMJ
so i shouldn't have problems if i use an 88 np231? then i even get to keep my vac. disconnect :D
JeepcoMJ
the ax5 uses a long input shaft on the t-case, so I need an adapter seal for it. already have the t-case that I HAVE to use because it's got the right speedometer system, np231 with a short input 21 spline. any ideas??? in the middle of the project, it's geonovast's DD and he needs it done monday mid-day. comancheon33
If anything I think you can swap the 207 input into the 231. I ran into the problem of the t case input not seating into the seal on an 88 I converted to 4wd a year ago. I ended up going to my local u pull it and taking the tailhousing out of an 89 2.5 AX5 and swapping it on to my 86 AX5 I got from a junkyard on carpart. I ran into the same problem when I put the 241 in my TJ. The 241 shaft was about 3/4 in shorter than the 231. I had to put a seal extender on the tranny. However, it said in it's discription that it was for 3 spd auto's only. Not sure if there is one for manual trannies.
Geonovast
I doubt you could swap the 207's input into the 231, they don't have the same reduction ratio.
