so how can you tell the difference whether the 8.8 rear out of an explorer is a posilok or not? do they all come standard posi ? what are the benefits of posi ?

I could probably figure it out in a day or 2 of research, but why not ask you pros 8) and so others can read and understand :idea:

the easiest way would be if it still has the Axle ID tag bolted onto the Diff cover. the first set of number on the bottom row will be the ratio and if it has the trac-lock it will have an L:

4 10 = 4.10's open

4L10 = 4.10's with limited slip

sweet, that helps a ton, since I was doing parts searches and I couldn't make heads or tails of the info being tossed at me... now I'll know what to look for :)

Personally I'd pull the cover and take a looksee, as it can be really hard to read those tags. Then you also won't be in for suprises if the axle was regearded (unlikely) or if there's something wrong with it, such as missing teeth...

yup, that's it's only detracting factor... but you would have to be very gas pedal "unintelligent" to bust it... couple of my hard core 4x4 friends have converted to 8.8 and have yet to bust a clip and they climb some fairly rough stuff that I tend to go around and take pics of and watch the carnage unfold hehehe

They don't make the axle weaker, just it sucks when you break the shaft. As in, break the shaft, nothing holds it and the tire in place anymore...

You can still limp on a snapped shaft with them, it just gets creative. Don't highway drive it like that though...
