kook911
Ok did a search and couldn't find the answer. My passenger side window regulator is stripped, as when I try to roll it up it does nothing. I can hear the gears grinding against each other. So much question is can I rebuild the one I have in there? If not does it matter if I get the front passenger or rear passenger side from a cherokee? Also does the year matter on which regulator I get?
ftpiercecracker1
I have, twice, and it is a HUUUGE PITA. There is a worm gear that runs inside of a metal tube inside the door. This is what went out on mine. I had to pry open the track, not easy, fish out the cable/worm gear and disconnect it from the window itself, also an ordeal. My passenger window still doesnt work 100%, but its better than not working at all. Its honestly better to replace the whole assembly, but no matter how you slice it, it is a major b*tch to change out, not technical, just difficult. I don't know if window regulators can be purchased new for our trucks, it may be a junkyard only thing. Pretty sure years don't matter to much either. FYI, one thing you do need to be prepared for is the fact that the entire assembly is riveted into place, meaning you will have to drill/grind the rivets to free the system and have the necessary hardware to remount it again. Nuts and bolts work fine. FPC
91Pioneer
I replaced my passenger side one, it's a bit of a pain to change out, but after seeing how it works I would think repairing it would be harder. I bought a used regulator on eBay for $10+shipping. It just needs to come out of a 84-96 4-door model Cherokee or any Comanche (must be front regulator, same side door too). Drilling out the rivets is easy. You have to partially remove the vent window stuff to do the swap. The regulator I got was out of a newer XJ (94-96) I think because it was held in by bolts from the factory so it made re-installation easier. Riveting is good as it holds forever and doesn't come loose, but they are 1/4" rivets so you need a special heavy duty rivet gun to install the new rivets if you go that route. kook911
Thanks for the info and I will be searching Ebay for one. Also the old owner drill out the rivets and place bolts in the holes all ready, so I am guessing that he tried to repair it at one point.
texasjack
If you take a small punch and knock out the steel expander pin you can drill the soft metal rivets is seconds.
