'94 XJ, fires but no run

Recommended Posts

Have a 1994 XJ, 4.0, 5speed, was in a front end mishap. After removing most off the sheet metal finally got the engine clear and started. RAN GREAT! After messing with it a couple days it will no longer run. Starts but just dies right away. Seems I read somewhere that there is a circuit, component that keeps the engine from running after so many starts. Some sort of anti theft device. Can't find anything in any of the manuals. Any body got any helpful ideas??

Do you have any idea of the history of the vehicle? Do you know if it has a security system? Seems to me I recall several years ago, possibly on the NAXJA forum, a discussion started by a guy in Sweden (or Iceland?) who had the same problem. I don't recall if it was ever resolved.

It's not as simple as a ballast resistor for the fuel pump, is it? I have a 2000 XJ but I don't know if they use the ballast resistor. If so, there's a bypass circuit to allow full power to the pump for starting, then after the key returned to the RUN position the current is routed through the ballast resistor. If the resistor is bad, it'll start on the bypass circuit and then die on the RUN circuit.

Pull the battery and leave if off for a day or 2.

^^  That won't do anything except clear the fault codes from memory.

This is supposed to work for the factory and dealer installed alarm system Jim:

Find the Light GREEN / ORANGE or PURPLE / YELLOW wire in the Driver Kick Panel / Door Boot. Skin the insulation from a spot on this wire and ground it. This will disarm the system until the ground is removed.
