Anyone Ever Stick Weld Sheet Metal?

Recommended Posts

I am planning to weld some patches into my floor pan later this summer and was going to try and use my stick welder. I found some small 1/16" 6013 rod that I was going to try. My plan is to practice on some scrap to see how it goes first. If I can't get it to turn out I will probably just buy a new mig welder.

If anyone has any experience with this or any tips let me know.

Thanks

I watched my father-in-law weld up a couple cracks in the fenders of his Chevy drilling rig using a Hobart portable welder. Came out real nice. Looked so easy I tried it on my '38 Chevy. Ended up replacing the fender.

Did it to my old cherokee to replace the entire floors. It's can be done but it will definetly not be pretty. I used thicker metal as patches and burned into that and allowed the weld pool to just barely "bleed" over into the sheet.
