Tail Light

Recommended Posts

Hey guys/gals I have a 91 comanche that was my truck growing up that I recently bought back for $300. I've put a ton of new parts on it so far but the tail lights are throwing me for a loop. Before I get lashed I will say I'm not a mechanic. My issue is my tail lights are not working at all, I've checked all the fuses that I could find. Is there a ground wire that I could clean before I replace the lights. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Behind the drivers side t . . . . ^ freakin wizard ^

EDIT: Yes, there is a ground behind the drivers side tail light housing. Pull housing out, clean point of contact to bare metal and see if that solves the problem. The sockets themselves can also be a problem from time to time, as well as the brake light switch itself.

I am on duty today but will check that out tomorrow when I get home. Hopefully that is the issue. Most of the reading I've done seems like if it's a fuse there will also be some problems with the dash lights so hopefully this is the problem. Thanks for the response.

Mj junkie, comanche fan, I pulled the light off and found the ground wire, cleaned it up, replaced some bulbs and everything worked great.

Thanks for the help

Did those guys PM you or something?  I feel so unloved, does mine and Mattwheels input not count for something?

I think some people confuse the post count nickname with a users username. seems to happen a lot so he was actually thanking the two of you.

OP:

Wouldn't hurt to check the connection of the rear harness and the tail light harness to make sure its good and tight with no corrosion or dirt clogging it up.

^^^^^^ft peachcracker and matt wheels, rely1120 is correct, I was looking at the wrong name, looked at the one right above the picture

rely1120, i checked the connection and somehow it looked brand new when I pulled it apart.

That's good, like the others said the ground is behind the drivers tail light but if you are fuel pump is working that should indicate that ground is good or at least not bad. I know there are 2 factory splices in the tail light harness and those are notorious for being bad (literally covered with duct tape) so if all else fails pull the split loom off the harness and check those splices.

Before that though i would suggest trying to provide power to the individual sockets to be sure they work before tearing into the harness.

You should also be able to use a multi-meter to prob the rear harness to see if you are getting power to the appropriate pins when the brake is pressed, turn signals etc that would definitely narrow your problem down to the rear harness/sockets.

Yup I cleaned the wire the rear ground wire and replaced the bulbs and everything worked so I'm not sure if all the bulbs were bad or if it was the ground but there all good now. I updated the ongoing projects so you can check out the pics if you would like, its under 1991 pioneer.
