Talk To Me About Clutches!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

Recently, the slave cylinder in my MJ decided to finally give up the ghost. I will be replacing it with another internal unit, mostly because I'm lazy, and I figure that if the original made it with minimal maintenance from the OP for nary 200,000 miles, I can get at least 50,000 out of a replacement.

This brings me to the subject at hand. What kind of clutch discs are you running? What do you like/dislike about them?

At this point, I can get either a stock replacement from the local parts store, or a high zoot, six puck, ceramic unit which looks killer, appeals to my inner boy-racer, and is still semi-reasonably priced.

Keep in mind, this is to be used between a 2.5L four banger and an AX5. I MAY install an inertia ring at this time as well.

Go with a Luk clutch. The one I did on my old 98 XJ has lasted 220k so far.

It had a centerforce in it when I got it. It was horrible. Way to stiff.

We weren't easy on the Luk clutch either. Didn't have first gear for 50k.

Hauled a VW westfalia camper van from Knoxville TN to Connecticut.

An MJ from Virginia without 1st. Plus a bunch of MJ's and XJ's locally.

Best part about it was that when I bought it it came with an AX15 and flywheel for $100.

They came out of a wreck. The guy said the clutch only had 800 miles on it.

Oem replacement.

Nice soft pedal, fast acting because you don't have to overcome spring pressure.

The VW and tow dolly combo weighed over 5,000 lbs and it never complained. There's a lot of hills on I-81 and I-84 between Tennesee and Connecticut.

The Luk gold will be all the clutch you will ever need.

The Luk repset is $114 on rock auto and includes the clutch, slave cylinder, pilot bearing, alignment tool and lube.

I also have a Sachs clutch in my YJ and it had no wear on it after 30k when I pulled the tranny for what I thought was a bad internal slave that turned out to be a bad master.

It feels like stock also.

I've never had good luck with high performance clutches. Stock type ones ive never had to replace
