Few 1987 Tech Questions

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a 1987 Jeep Comanche with a 4cyl TBI , 4Speed , 4x4 , short bed , A/C , and Powering Steering. VIN: 1JTHX6312HT001620

I purchased the Jeep and had to leave for some military training for 4 weeks and i am about a week out from returning home and want to go ahead and order a few parts to have on hand when i get home to get the jeep up and running. Jeep has been parked and not running for 4+ years (PO said fuel pump went out and he parked it)

 - What size Fuel tank should my Jeep have and where might be the best place to buy one?

 - I am wanting to purchase Plugs, Wires, Dist Cap, Rotor.... (any certain brand or type that is best for the 4cy)?

Thanks,

Jeep Sarge

You should have an 18 gallon tank. Where to buy one? I don't know, sorry. As far as the tune up stuff, I used an ACCEL universal wire set (roll your own), Champion plugs, and an ACCEL cap and rotor (more for the bronze contacts than anything else).

NAPA Premium on the rotor and cap, I would not buy their wires again though.

I have had good luck with the Motorcraft plugs, ran a set in my Ranger for 7 years and one set in the Comanche now for 2 years.

Also, on the wires......you have AC.......number 1 plug wire needs to be a 90 degree boot at the plug, most wires are now with all straight boots. The rad hose will press the boot against the AC compressor and arc out, thats what happened with my NAPA set. I had them warranty the set.....have a new set here......but I saved the old set and put them back on.

I'd like a set of Taylor but the $80 price tag is a set back.

I'll look for a good set for an 8cyl and make my own.......will get two sets that way.

Again I am relatively new to Comanche’s but not new to Jeeps; I just am not that familiar yet with the 2.5 TBI as to what works best. I plan on keeping this Jeep and will be going thru everything on it and know that it is going to need a new Gas tank and Tune up for sure just trying to spend my money wisely upfront

.

I do agree on the Radiator Hose and the thermostat housing to Intake is not good either.

I am not at all trying to come across as a elicit but I thought the same thing on the A/C until looking at the pictures more but I haven’t been able to find any picture with the compressor located on the bottom either ????

Mine is an 88.

Just a guess......

Since you have the hood prop rod across the radiator support, you may have an 87 with what was left of 86 parts, that may be why the AC compressor is in an odd spot.
