coyote kid
I had to replace my rear end a while ago, I shattered the pinion and didn't have enough money so I just used one from my non running 86 Cherokee with the 2.8 turd and ax5 to get me by for a while ....problem is I have a 4 speed and on the highway its turning around 3000 rpm at 55, I finally have enough cash, so my question is what gear ratio would be best to replace it with ... I am looking mostly for fuel economy ... any advice helps...thanks-chris
FrankTheDog
Can you throw the AX5 in it so you have overdrive?

Rockfrog
didn't the 4spd 2.5s get 3.55 gears ... ??? ... so either go back to 3.55 and used pretty much any stock 4.0L automatic XJ axle right up until 01 ... not sure a 3.07 gearing would work for the 2.5L but IIRC it was the fuel miser option of the day ... and 3.07 with an ax4 puts you just under 2000rpm at 55mph ... perfect for a 4.0 ... not so sure about a 2.5. Been a decade since i owned one. or swap in another good ax5 both a 3.07 and 3.55 should be plentiful and cheap as complete axles.
dasbulliwagen
If youre planning the 4x4 swap, I would keep the 4 .10 axles and find a good AX5. Might even be cheaper that way than having new gears set up. That way too you can use the fronbt axle from the donor as well as is.
jpnjim
Taller tires will knock the RPMs down a bit, if you were planning on bigger tires after the 4x4 swap, move the schedule up & do the tires first :) Sounds like you have 4.10's right now, 32's would knock a bunch of RPM off at highway speeds
