'89 Mj No Reverse? Help!

My '89 Eliminator 4.0 automatic doesn't want to engage reverse and it feels like I'm in neutral. All other gears work fine. Any info will be greatly appreciated!! Mahalo

My gear indicator isn't lined up so sometimes I think I'm in reverse when I'm really in neutral. But you checked that...

 

Check your atf level (engine on after a short drive). Top up or if it's brown, change it and the filter. Watch for metal in the atf.

Clean the trans pan and put in a new filter.

Went thru all the gears many times with no luck..

Will be looking into a filter and trying it out today. Thanks guys!
