Blue88Comanche
I recently had a d30 elocker installed and I am starting to think the installer sucks. first the brakes did not work, now I noticed there is about 1/8 inch or slightly less on and out movement of the pinion gear shaft. I discovered this while replacing the front drive shaft u-joint trying to stop vibes once I hit 40mph. My other d30 does not have any movement in a similar way. so come Monday i am going back to that off road shop again..
ComancheKid45
Is the pinion yoke nut tight?
Blue88Comanche
Is the pinion yoke nut tight? not sure about that... but it goes in and out when i rotate it making me think its missing shims. i don't think tightening the yoke bolt would fix that would it? Keyav8r
The pinion shaft should not have any in/out or side to side movement. If it was recently installed, there should be very little slack in rotation. Sounds like a bad install.
64 Cheyenne
I'm no expert, but I have set up 4 sets of ring&pinion in my back yard, NONE of them have ANY visible in and out movement. Think about it, any play would allow the pinion to contact the ring gear heal-toe back and forth. Not good. Granted my lock-right in my 30 has play, but that is inherent to the locker, not the set up of the ring and pinion. FWIW, 2 sets I did (R&P) 1 still running strong, three years later (88 Chief), the other set put together not run yet. Build in progress (87 Sportruck). Timeless
Unless its only the yoke that is moving, the pinion shaft should not move like that. That movement is killing your gears and your bearings. If you pull the diff cover, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a fair amount of metal in the oil.
Blue88Comanche
Apparently it was missing shims...
64 Cheyenne
Holy cow! How could they have verified pinion depth, or bearing preload, with no shims? Damage? I hope you raised a real stink and got compensation or somethin for it. What if it went to hell on the highway, things could have gotten ugly... Not sayin it would have locked up, probably wouldn't have, but who's to say?
Blue88Comanche
When I change the diff fluid at 150 miles I will check for damage and try to get a good pic of the wear pattern for reference. I am starting to think I could have done a better job and I never set up gears before... What tools are 100% required for a gear install, I know a press will be needed for the bearings. I have an extra axle I can practice on if I wanted.
64 Cheyenne
Press, dial indicator, calipers, torque wrench ft/lb and in/lb, bearing separator. and $$$$$$$$ Really not for the novice or faint of heart, but if your willin...thats how I learned. Blue88Comanche
that may be something i get into later on when i have some extra cash. i think the front axle has a whine when under load, is that something that will go away as the gears are broken in?
