Bouncy Speedometer

I have recently replaced my speedometer cable in the mj today. It drove fine on my way to work, but on the way back it started to bounce more like it skips cause bounces between 60-65 although I'm keeping with traffic flow in the fast lane doing roughly 70. The cable is out of a 90 Cherokee that had roughly 168xxx on its clock and was a 4wd model with the aw4. Mines a 2wd pegout. What could the problem be?

Remove the cable housing from the speedometer. Remove the cable from the housing. Clean, lube,Graphite and replace everything.

To add on to what jimoshel said, make sure there aren't any severe angles in the line. Don't bend it too far to reach the back of the speedometer, or the t-case/tranny.

Any good ways to take everything apart to clean and lube?

If you go to a motorcycle shop they make this cool little gadget that screws onto the cable and forces the liquid/spray down the housing/sleeve. It was $7 bucks i think. Bought one years ago for my old Honda never thought I'd use it again but used it on mine and it lessened.

Didn't do it on the way to work, but does it on the way home?

 

You didn't secure it very well, mine freund, I bet it got melted on the exhaust. Two ways it binds like that...improper routing, or melting. I have yet to see one that was moving fine one way fail due to a lack of lube.

I rerouted it in the dash a bit. I have it secured away from the exhaust because that is how my old cable went bad.

Re routing in the dash will cause binding. Route it straight through the hole from the firewall through the column bracket. Going around does not help.
