HOrnbrod
I realize these axles are wider, but will a ring and pinion gear set from one of the SJ rear axles work in the XJ/MJ rear D44? The pumpkins are the same, si?
Comanchemodder
I know there are two different carriers in the D44. I don't recall the cut-off, but I believe 3.73 and below use different. Whatever you are swapping into, make sure the carrier is right .

The pumpkins are the same, si? The 84-91 axles are close to the same width. Fronts are 61" and the rears are 59". Yes, the ring and pinions are the same. Carrier break is 3.73 and down 3.92 and up. Incommando
I noticed your sig says you have 4.10's in a D44. As long as the donor R&P matches the carrier you currently have or you get the carrier with the donor R&P you are golden. The BEST gear ratio that you could hope for in a last gen FSJ was 3.55 so unless the gears/carrier were swapped in the donor FSJ its R&P will not match the carrier in your sig line. HOrnbrod
Thanks guys. The reason I'm asking is because I picked up for cheap a regulation NOS AMC D44 rear gear set (standard cut, includes ring, pinion, bearings, gasket) in a weird 4.27 ratio. In crossing the AMC part number it fits 84-91 Jeep Grand Wagoneer SJ rear D44 axles. So I'm assuming it will fit all D44s with the correct carrier. I'm not planning on using it, but reselling it. I have not heard of the 4.27 ratio for D44s, and it would be a good ratio for a rig with 32-34 inch tires. It's in an AMC factory box, and the R&P gears are Dana Spicer. In searching some more, I found plenty of 4.27 aftermarket gears for front and rear D44s.
carnuck
'80 to '86 FSJs had a Model 20 rear and D44 front. D44 rear didn't come back till mid '88 (as Chrysler was taking over)
