Swapping Fuse Boxes..

Recommended Posts

Hi, my fuse box is falling apart so I picked up a replacement with the full harness attached. I was wondering what all do I have to remove to do this? I have most of the interior out aside from the dash. Any insight and help would be appreciated.

Well, you really only have two options. Cut and solder/splice every single wire from the old harness onto the "new" fuse block OR just replace the entire interior harness with the one you just bought.

The only problem with the cut and splice method is the, sometimes, unpredictability of jeep wiring, meaning that just because two wires are the same color doesnt mean they go together. Look over the harness you bought with a fine tooth comb, if you cannot find any defects that can't be easily mended just use the whole thing to replace you original harness.

Is the harness you bought from the exact same year model as the truck you have?

its not to hard to pull the dash out on the Cherokees, there are right ups on the net.

basically unscrew the defrost vent cover

pull the 4 bolts under that

take out the lower dash board/knee panel

drop the steering wheel, take out the 2 steel rods that help support the steering column.

then out to the sides, under the dash on the kick panel/ door frame loosen the larger bolts and the dash will hinge out and  off of those.

theres gonna be little screws here and there but thats about the sum of it.

as far as the fuse box, i've done it. combo of cut and splice and removing wires to swap over to the new fuse box.

scope out auto part store for weather pack tools, little yellow handles with a long skinny blade on them, you use that to unlock the fuse sockets so they slide out the back of the fuse box

The outside connectors on the firewill are kind of a pain, but can be removed from the fuse box.

Remove the dust covers from the two harnesses and then with a mirror, look between the two halves of the connector to find a bolt head.  On mine it was a 9mm bolt.  Remove the bolt and the connector bodies will then dis-engage from the firewall side of the fuse box.  I forget which half of the connector

comes off first, but one half is held captive by the other.

this connector is almost identical to the c101 connector if you need to see an example.

When you re-install, leave some slack in the mounting screws for the fuse block or you will not have room to re-attach the outside connector.
