bmb5589 Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I have a 1986 jeep comanche 2.5l that i recently replaced the engine in. Before i replaced the engine the trans leaked and it did afterwards aswell...i replaced the shaft seal on the front and it still leaks. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you fix it. I would love to get it to stop leaking trans fluid cause I'm always worried about it Thanks guys
ParadiseMJ Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Where is it leaking from? Is it a manual or automatic?
carnuck Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 904 lockup auto was the only factory auto for the 4 cyl till '88. It could be the dipstick tube or the torque converter neck had a groove worn into it.
HOrnbrod Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Wrong. The 904 was only used in the 86 models. The AW4 took it's place in 1987 for both the 4.0 and 2.5.
carnuck Posted January 12, 2014 Posted January 12, 2014 4.0L never got the 904 in XJ or MJ stock. YJs did till '00. 08/86 is '87 model year but leftover parts were used till Chrysler did the full takeover..

bmb5589 Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 I believe it is the TF 904 its automatic 3 speed and yeah that's a good call I should look at that and see...you would think the guy that worked on my trans would have looked at that $#!& though....
bmb5589 Posted January 13, 2014 Author Posted January 13, 2014 Paradise MJ it is leaking out of the bell housing it looks like I haven't took the time to really look at it though...the trans fluid builds up on the bell housing and drips off though
carnuck Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Is the motor running with a weird RPM related vibe? When the torque converter goes bad they will do that. The 9XX neck cracks and causes a vibe and gets worse very quickly. If it doesn't, then it's probably just the front seal.
