Mrs. Comanche

Recommended Posts

I bought an '87 4 cylinder, 2 wheel drive Comanche sport truck about three years ago as a fun project that could serve as an everyday vehicle.

I was fortunate that when I got her she was in pretty good shape for living in the cold, icy, salty Maine coast where I got her.

The most obvious problem was a leaking valve cover gasket that someone had let go far too long.

A good day spent replacing the gasket,

spark plugs, cap and router, and water pump made her a happy girl.

After the basic mechanics were taken of, I decided that she needed a little cosmetic surgery to help with some minor rust spots and general appearance.  I wanted her to be unique, so removing the decals in preparation for a custom paint job was in order.

And then she got her new color.

I felt like she needed an homage to her roots, while still being uniquely mine, so I also did custom decals.

And my favorite

Next, I'm starting to try and figure out what to do with the interior.  Right now I'm working on the sound system, which was an after market 90's tape deck with front speakers held in by magnets.  I guess she originally came with no sound system as the slots for the front and rear speakers don't have any supports installed already.  I figure while I have to disassemble the trim to install new speakers, I may as well address the trim at the same time.  The trim (and bench seat) are a horrible "smurf blue" that drives me nuts.  If I am going to have to pull it out anyways to install the sound system I figure I may as well seize the opportunity to either paint it, or get some replacement parts.  I would love to go all black, but finding any donor trucks in local yards has been pretty rough, and I am nervous about the longevity of using plastic paint.

Once I have the sound system installed and trim changed/painted, the next major project will be switching out the bench seat for some buckets....  And then maybe a companion comanche for my fiance.
