creepin'
I have a 92 comanche 4.0 HO the motor runs good and only has 90k miles. The motor runs good but need some work needs a head gasket bad and has been getting progressively worst with raping and ticking noises and it sounds like a diesel when it's warmed up and idling. I'm looking for some opinions on what I can do without removing the engine to freshen it up some.
carnuck
If you run it much longer without fixing it, it will self ventilate (ie: rod out the side)
Babyblack86
What does " freshen it up " mean? You want to repair it or "doctor it up" for the auction block? Geez Louise, man, fix the thing! If you try to patch the problem and pass it on to the next guy, there will be NO PLACE IN JEEP VALHALLA FOR YOU! I know I would be Intetested in a nice 92 MJ. Don't have one of those yet. If you do not want to properly fix her, put her up for sale. I'll make you a decent offer. Then I'll replace the flippin' head gasket and add that 92 model year to the collection. Let's have more details on the truck and some nice pics! 8) 8) 8)....hope that gives you incentive to crack open the tool box before it gets too late! What's the oil look like? Is it milky yet or is the coolant still just blowing out the exhaust?
Eagle
For starters, you can replace the head gasket and you can replace the rod bearings. That would take care of the head gasket, and should eliminate any rapping. I'm confused, though, as to how it is that you think an engine that needs a head gasket, raps, and makes ticking noises "runs well."
Babyblack86
LOL! My Fine China determines " running well" as anything that gets her from point A to point B without catching on fire. 3)
Oyaji
raping and ticking noises "Raping"? That's more than a bit disturbing... I'd be freaking out too if my engine was making these sounds! Seriously though... can you identify the frequency? Crankshaft noise is the same frequency as the engine RPM divided by 60, and is indicative of an engine on its way out. Camshaft noise is only half the crankshaft frequency (because it only turns half the speed of the engine) and may not be particularly bad at all. Pretty common is valvetrain noise caused by worn stamped-steel rocker arms, which are pretty cheap and easy to replace...
Babyblack86
Ya know, laugh laugh chuckle choak, excuse me, cough; ya got a valid point there. Any engine making RAPING NOISES is basically screaming NO NO STOP STOP NOOOO! Best to listen and learn before things get outta hand, son.
jimoshel
I think he meant 'wrappimg',
Babyblack86
I know, but at my age you make your fun where you find it or you spend the day sobbing in your soup about those missed opportunities. RAPPING, RAPING, WRAPPING (which is by the way what you do to Christmas presents or cold cuts); all great ball busting chances. Notice I didn't jump on your little red wagon about the misuse of WRAPPING....I'm half asleep with half my brain tied behind my back. ( can't help myself). 8)
creepin'
Is it possible to remove the engine without taking the transmission and transfer case out?
jimoshel
Yes. But I have found it's easier to remove the engine transmission as a unit. It's the two bolts on top of the bell housing that makes it difficult to remove just the engine.
