Looking For A *cherokee* Now...

Went up to where my dad works to help him clean up a car, and noticed that they recently got an '02 Wrangler Sport on the lot in trade. The company is still going through all the paperwork, and it's up in the air whether or not it's going on the line, or being taken to the local auction to sell.

Should have grabbed some pictures, but here's the general specs.  :typing:

- White with Cloth-top

- 4.0 with 4x4 and 3-Speed Auto*

- Powertrain seems in good shape, let it run for a few minutes and goosed on it, sounds great for what mileage it has on it.

- Basically stock everything, which is a huge plus.

- Aside from a little grime and dirt, paint is still in great condition and would clean up well.

Am really considering taking another look at it; would be nice to have a different daily driver instead of the MJ. I wouldn't get rid of the MJ, but I would be able to put it on the side to give it the work and attention it needs without worrying about how to get back and forth while it's down.

The biggest thing I'm wondering about is what kind of gas mileage I'll be getting with the 3-speed auto tranny, as opposed to the manual or 4-speed that was offered starting in 03. Not only that, but is there anything important to know in regards to these transmissions that would make or break a deal? I read that the 02-03 TJ's are the oddball years, with parts being upgraded or totally replaced by newer things. Not sure entirely when this one was built (slipped my mind to check the door tag) I'm not entirely opposed to the 3-speed (also read that it was pretty stout tranny, dating back to the CJ's of old) but I'm worried that the 4.0 would get wound out on the highway, which is what I'd probably be using it for. Not really big into the 4x4 scene, but I've always wanted a 4x4 vehicle. 4.0 is definitely a must have.

Fairly certain I could snag it for a good price, but am unsure at the moment of what exactly it'd go for. Definitely not a set-in-stone affair, but I'd be interested in getting some info from you knowledgeable people. Surely someone must have had one of these little oddballs at one time or another.  :dunno:

I have an 05 LJ with an auto I just bought. While I love being able to drop the top and cruise it makes for a horrible DD. The ride sucks and it gets horrible mileage. It gets on a good day 16 mpg. If you want a topless Jeep to play around with get it. If you want a good DD that gets good mileage look elsewhere. A TJ is not it.

What he said.  The wife's 2.5 5sp only gets about 16-18 mpg daily driven.  That is stock with 31's.

She loves it, though.  Been driving it for 16 years, now.

But as said above, if you are at all worried about MPG, don't get a TJ.

And if it is all stock, you'll be putting bigger tires on it, etc. and MPG will suffer even worse.

OK, I'm going to disagree.  My '97 TJ, 4.0, AX15, 3.07 gears and 31x10.50's, and no lift,  was used for 4 years to commute 20 miles each way to work each day.  As long as I did NOT use 5th gear I averaged 23MPG.  It didn't matter if I took the interstate or local highway.  The mileage stayed pretty much the same.  The tranny in the '02 is an A999/32RH most likely.  Final drive ratio is 1:1 same as 4the gear in the AX15. The '02 A999/32RH may be a lock up converter.  I don't know.  Either way I would expect you might get 20MPG give or take.  Keep the rpm's around 2500 when cruising if you can and 20mpg wouldn't be a dream at all!!  After my 4" lift and 4.10 gears I still get 19mpg on the interstate, 15-17mpg around town.

  • 1 month later...

So the deal with the Wrangler fell through, surprise surprise.

Decided to settle for a Cherokee to bridge the gap. Didn't need no fancy small-box anyhow.

On the prowl for a 91-early 96 preferably, with 4x4. Can't find anything down here in the south that isn't beat to crap, extremely modified, rusty, or overpriced. Found some decent 97+ ones though. So I might be looking down that route.

Do the 97+ models have the ability to run a self diagnosis like the OBD1 variants? Just curious. Doesn't matter much in the long run, seeing as how I'll only own it for about 4 months or so. Hopefully I can find something soon.  :crossfingers:
