I know I found this info somewhere before, but doing a search I didn't come across it again. I either overlooked it or found it on another forum.

Getting ready to replace my rear main and I'm needing to know what the torque specs are for the oil pan bolts and the bolts for the cover thingy that holds the bottom half of the rear main.

From the "Jeep Engines 3rd Edition" (P5007161), P276, 4.0L engine:

pan bolts (1/4-20): 7 ft.lb

pan bolts (5/16-18): 11 ft.lb

Pan cover bolts: 70 in.lb

EDIT:  Not sure if the one-piece pan gasket requires different torque.

From the'88 FSM: 1/4" bolts (and studs) - 84 inch pounds, 5/16" bolts (and studs) - 132 inch pounds, oil pump cover bolts - 70 inch pounds. Same as the previous post except in inch pounds. Use a 1/4" or 3/8" drive inch pound torque wrench. A foot pound torque wrench probably won't be very accurate at the low end of it's range.

Someone on the forum has the 88 FSM in pdf format and can send it to you. They sent it to me, but I can't remember who it is! Ah, the delights of one's golden years.

Awesome, thanks. Just what I needed. I did find the pdf of the '88 FSM on here, but I couldn't find any torque specs in it. I'll just have to buy all 2 or 3 FSMs for '88 sometime, however many there are for that year.

I'm pretty sure the torque table is in the pdf 88 FSM as that's where I found it. Just had to scroll through the dis-assembly/ assembly section (I think that's where I found it).
