Geonovast
I need a 97-01 4 door driver's door. Preferably manual windows and locks. Don't care at all about color as long as it's in decent shape and has good glass. I know I could just change the window, but 1. I have no idea how, and 2. It's probably just easier to swap the door. I need this because I woke up to this - Need to be in or around Springfield, MO. I've been to the biggest junkyard here recently, and all they had was an 88 and a 92, so I'm not hopeful. If changing the glass isn't as bad as I'm thinking, I could use some help with that.
jimoshel
I have done both. Changed the door and changed the glass. Either way is a PITA. If you don't have power windows and such, then it's probably easier to change the door. Pull the two pins on the hinges and remove the two bolts holding the door stop and you've got it. So now can you get a door that matches or do you paint it to match, or just don't worry about it? To change the glass you remove the door panel, the weather stripping around the window, The window channels. The regulator is held in with rivets instead of bolts. You can change the glass by yourself. You can also change the door by yourself but it is easier with help. Six of one. Half a dozen of the other. I do have a door and a glass. You going to come after it?
Geonovast
Appreciate the offer Jim, but I actually got a text from a member out in Joplin, and he's got one for me, so I'll be running out there soon to get it. Hopefully we can just get away with changing the glass, but if not, maybe I can talk the door out of him... despite it being red. Obviously getting a door to match color would be preferable.. but it certainly wouldn't be a deal breaker. And, of course, a few months ago, my dad wrecked his XJ, which was the exact same color as mine.. and I'm pretty sure his driver's door was fine. But, alas, he's 600 miles away and didn't buy back the truck.
Alexia
Changing the glass is easy besides all the clean up of the broken glass. Swapping the door and aligning it will be more a pain to do. If you need additional help or a vocal walk through PM me for my phone number. I am available tonight to talk. Take the door panel off. Two to three screws in the arm rest. One screen behind the door latch handle. Use a window crank removal tool to get the crank off.(Few dollars at the automotive parts store.) About eight push clips around the edges. Temporarily put the window crank back on and put the window track down about 2/3 until the two gold colored bolts can be see through the big opening. Unbolt glass retainers. Lots of glass clean up! To remove the rubber trim/track remove the lower inner seal then the outer lower seal. Then the rubber track can be grabbed and yanked out. Note: The rubber track inside the door at the bottom rear is riveted to the silver metal track. It clips in at the top and two bolts near the bottom rear of the inside door. Installing new glass: Make sure the rubber tracks are in place first, but leave the two lower trim pieces off for now. Grip the glass from the top tilting the front of the glass towards the ground at about a 45º angle and slowly start to lower it into the door frame being careful not to scratch it. Once the full length is inside it can be straightened up while inserting it into the tracks. Lower the glass to the two bolts and snugly tighten the bolts. Reinstall the lower trim and door panel pieces. Done!
Geonovast
Thanks Alexia, I ran out to TheDirtyJeep401's place in Joplin, and he walked me through getting the new glass in. It's in, but cleanup has to wait for another day, so the door is only halfway back together. Now the real trick is to get our apartment management to actually install some security cameras around here instead of having the insanely lazy security company drive through once a day, at the same time every day. After some talks with our neighbors, turns out this is at least the 6th time this has happened this year.
TheDirtyJeep401
Now everytime he shuts the door it rattles like marbles in the bottom. :D Glad it worked out great. Now it looks original and as if nothing even happened.
