Byrdock
Does the cooling fan relay on a 88 4.0 use a 5 terminal relay like the fuel pump relay? My plug has 4 wires for the outside terminals, but nothing in the center. The relay is a 4 terminal relay but I can't find any parts places that have one like it. Do I have to go to the dealer for this part?

onlyinajeep726
You can just use a 5-prong relay. They work the exact same. The 4-prong one is just a 5-prong with that center one missing.

Sure, if you want to hack off the unused 5th relay pin to fit the 4-pin relay socket. Also the aux fan relay is a 40A relay; the other common 5-pin relays used are only 30A. onlyinajeep726
All three of my Renix era XJ's have a 5-prong socket. As far as the 40A thing, I'm not saying you're wrong, however, all three of mine had the stock 4-prong relay installed and all of them were 30A. The stock fan pulls somewhere in the neighborhood of about 23-25 amps IIRC. I don't know what's going on there, but honest to goodness all three have 5-prong sockets.
