streetjeep2.5
... at around every half turn of my steering wheel both ways on my 352,000 mile 87 4x2 manual steering 'manche. Started a week ago and does not seem to get any worse. It's strong enough that when I allow the steering to naturally center itself, the last "bind" before centering keeps it from centering right away like it used to. My steering gear was replaced about 50,000 ago so I "think" it should be ok. Since it is both ways and every half turn, could it be one of the two steering shaft u-joints that I bet I will need to get a whole shaft if so? Or, are there bearings in the steering column for the shaft that could be the culprit?
jimoshel
Since it does it every half turn pretty much tells you it's a Ujoint. If it did it once every turn then it would be stripped gear in the steering box. There is a bearing in the coluum ust below the wheel. Not likely the problem.A hard pull, or yank, sideways on the wheel should be firm. No give.

Guess I start a'lookin for a shaft!

ComancheKid45
No, the steering shaft has a small U joint included in it. Thats likely what theyre talking about ;)
