fendermb4 Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 A while back I asked about getting started with welding. Now that I have all the gear and have read a lot about it, I have one more question. Many places suggest getting scrap metal and just welding random stuff to practice. Does anyone know where I can buy such metal in CT? I'm not aware of any "metal stores". Sorry for the newb question - I just haven't had any exposure to this. My friends are all computer geeks of the non-welding variety. Thanks!
Mitch Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 might look on craigslist or in the paper for free scrap
lostissues Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 around here at least, we have a place called harding metals, they are a big metal recycling yard, kinda a junk yard for scrap metal. i don't know how common these are but there may be something like it around you, take a look in a phone book or online. http://www.hardingmetals.com/ hope this helps. Jonathan EDIT: this isnt a free thing, they charge by weight and kind of metal.
Stumpy Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 when i was in high school metal working class we got free scrap from a place that built steel rafters and such, we would weld on it and send it back to them to recycle. so you might hit the HS up to see if they would loan you some and after your done practicing you take it back to them.
Wildman Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 For new, a little pricey you could find this - http://www.metalsupermarkets.com/ They do have a "cut off" rack, other wise, a junk yard / scrap yard should be a good supplyer for scrap practic pieces. It's always good to see some one picking up a trade  There are enought computer geeks out there. :hateputers:
CWLONGSHOT Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 I use LOGAN STEEL, in Meriden CT. They have a "scrap" area where you can buy anything in there for .75c a pound. CW

Eagle Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 +1 for Logan Steel. And they are (or at least were) open on Saturday mornings for people like us to wander in looking for scrap and asking dumb questions ...
