fishdmax
I have a new inner shift boot, the on that screws in the top of the transmission hump. How do I remove the shift lever to install it?? Steve
Keyav8r
Put the transmission in neutral, remove the bolts that hold the shift lever in the tower, then pull the shift lever out of the transmission. Clamp the lower part of the shift lever in a vise (being careful not to put any burrs or scrapes on it - maybe use wood between the vise jaws and the shift lever). Put a block of wood against the lower end of the square section and hit the block with a hammer. You can put the boot over the lower part of the shift lever and knock the upper part back on. At least that's the way it worked on my 88 BA-10. Not sure if it's exactly the same on the AX-15, but it should be close.

Scottracer
Did you get a new boot? If so where did you get it if I may ask. Been looking for one. Thanks
fishdmax
I got it from a dealer in Glenwood Springs CO, last on he had. He said a dealer in California has the last seven in the computer. Part # 53002864. Your local Jeep dealer should be able to get one of them. 87MJTIM
I picked one up from the stealership. I had to request the boot for a TJ. If you tell them an MJ, they will tell you it is not available.
dan12
Hi everybody; I found this very helpful for this topic because 90% of the time you need to remove the shifter to change the boot.Is for a MJ but think is the same piece for the jeep comanche. http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/shifter-boot-repair-rebuild-28766/
SporTruck87
I thought an MJ was a Comanche?
