Zeke&Me
Hey Guys, So I parked my Comanche last night... went to start it this morning and I don't get any turn over... I thought that the battery was dead so I went and tried to jump it (even though its brand new)... nothing! I don't get anything from the ignition at all... no radio no nothing... but the lights work fine.... any ideas on what it might be? Its not turning over... and there is brand new starter in it aswell. 1986 2.8 5 speed
onlyinajeep726
Got voltage at the starter relay? Everything hooked up correctly?
mpace6a
x2, check the relay. That was my 2.8s issue when it wouldnt start.
Zeke&Me
Is the relay right next to the battery?
Zeke&Me
The starter relay was not it. Any other ideas?
mpace6a
Yes, thats the relay. Can you hear it click when someone turns the key? The relay should make a click when the key is turned, seperate from the starter solenoid. An easy way to check it is to cross the terminals on the relay. If it starts with terminals crossed, but not with the key, it more than likely needs to be replaced.
onlyinajeep726
On a somewhat related note, what the heck is up with this wire (see below)? That should not be butted to a wire of smaller gauge. I'm surprised that this has not started a fire or melted at the very least. You should fix that soon lol. Zeke&Me
I took the column apart because I was not getting anything... Like no hvac controls... no radio no dash lights....no nothing... I found it to be a bad ignition switch... I Don't think its a common part to fail but hey who knows. I wish I didn't take the whole thing apart trying to figure it out... but soundimas prime started right up after I put the new one in... . :MJ 1: . Thanks for the ideas... I really need to get a manual for this thing.
onlyinajeep726
Glad you got it fixed but I'd still advise fixing that start relay supply wire to an equal or great gauge wire.

Awesome, start a build thread! What'd you get the 3.4 out of? Gettin real tired of my 2.8 puttin around like its got 88hp, need a bigger powerplant....not sure if i want small and simple, or go all out with a v8 or diesel... Zeke&Me
I got the 3.4 out of a 93 firebird. I am going to put the fuel injection system on it because the fuel economy and throttle response. I am having the machine shop open the heads up a bit and I am trying to find a truelo intake for it as well. Should be able to get about 200 hp out of the motor when its done. I have a build thread. search 3.4 efi swap
carnuck
Keep in mind there are 2 different flexplates. Early 2.8s were externally balanced and late '86 were internal. The 3.4L is internal.
Zeke&Me
I wonder if a flywheel from an 88 fiero would work.
