Wink Mirror In An Mj?

Recommended Posts

So, I've been only mildly kicking around the idea of picking up a Wink mirror now that I have a nice, new headliner in the Jeep. After reviewing THIS THREAD on honda-tech, I've been kicking it around a bit more. I've seen them in old VW Beetles but have not explored them in any depth in person other than from the outside of the car. They seemed to be popular in the 70s and 80s, and feel they would be period-correct for use in an MJ

Has anyone used a Wink mirror in an MJ or have any thoughts on them?

Blind spots? In an MJ? No way, haha.

I think it may be more work than it's worth. From the looks of it, you'd lose your sun visors, and the MJ, my experience atleast, has no blind spots except for the passenger side pillar, which I just lean a bit forward to overcome.

I had never heard of a Wink mirror until I read this topic. Assume it helps to eliminate blind spots?

Yes, it would be more of a panoramic view of what is behind. Since the outside mirrors have a narrow view and I run a fiberglass canopy half the year during the winter months, the truck has its blind spots.

Most five panel mirrors I have found are right at 35" wide. While it may eliminate sunvisors [mine are shot] and the original rearview [shakes], I was thinking the mirror itself could double as a sunvisor and if I tint the front window along the top or locate a Lund visor it would competely eliminate the need for visors. As I am 5'10", I don't use use the sunvisors unless the sun is low in the sky. Besides, an entire mirror setup is fairly inexpensive~ around $30.

Yes, the Lund visor works pretty well. About the only time I have to use the sun visors is when the sun is setting dead ahead on the horizon. Were Wink mirrors ever offered as factory equipment on a vehicle?

Obviously you don't have a camper shell out back.

I remember Wink mirrors. IMHO they are a solution in search of a problem, and in use they are exceptionally distracting. Personally, I think they're dangerous and should not be legal, but ... nobody asked me.

If you don't see them any more -- consider that there may be a reason for that.

Those wink mirrors were used a lot for the deaf and hard of hearing. So since they can't hear emergency vehicles approaching from behind they can view from the rear view. I know this because my parents are deaf and have used them before.

They are completely unnecessary. If the standard rearview and two sideview mirrors are correctly adjusted, there is no blind spot, from 90 degrees right (passenger side) all the way around to 90 degrees left (driver's side).
