Oddmodman
Just got a '92 NP242J out of a '92 4.0 HO, automatic. What I want to put it into: 1990 4.0 AX15. Will I have to switch out the shaft? I believe it's a 23 spline, I'm just not sure about the length.
Geonovast
AFAIK, the AW-4 case shafts were longer, so you should be able to put it on an AX-15 as long as it slides on all the way. The input shaft on the T-case would hit the C-clip for the output shaft's 5th gear if it was too long, but I don't think it will be. Someone else should be able to verify. Blue88Comanche
my 242 fit without any problem, now as far as properly (correct shaft length) I don't know.. All i can say is it bolted up to my AX-15 and it seems to work

Blue88Comanche
if you plan to run full time 4wd I would look into V8 ZJ cv style shafts.. I have some, (and a couple pics on my build thread) it will make turns smoother while in 4wd, the shafts are simple to swap. you can keep the U-Joint shafts as backups if they are in good shape
