Seat Back Tilt Mechanism

Recommended Posts

This is not the latch that holds the entire seat back up, but rather the black handle for the tilt function. The issue is that is does not release at all. Is it supposed to be pushed downwards or pulled upwards to activate it? Any easy fixes for freeing the mechanism? I already broke one handle trying to force it.

I believe you lift up to release, and more than likely you'll need to get inside the seat to fix things. When mine in one of my past rigs would stick, I would take a big flat head screw driver and push the metal "J" arm or whatever you want to call it over by getting in from behind the seat and wedging it between the seat back and bottom. Say it was the drivers seat, I'd wedge it in and push the arm towards the passenger side while pushing the seat back towards the back of the cab. Hope that makes sense, kind of hard to explain, but I could show ya if I had buckets.

Ah, then I'm not sure what you're referencing since it's been so long since I had an MJ with buckets. All I remember is the release lever for the seat back and the handle at the front bottom of the seat to make it slide. Sorry about that.

The handle must be pulled up. I have found it easier to remove the seat than trying to work on it still in the truck. Usually the problem is it gets full of gunk and must be cleaned and lubed.

i agree

the handle to tilt my factory bucket seats forward is located near the top of the seat.

Ah that handle, I remember it now. Never used it when I did have buckets so forgot all about it. I do remember the ones on my 91 being very stiff though when I got it so I'd agree with above about needing cleaned and lubed.
