JohnQ
Stupid emissions light is on. I know absolutely nothing about emissions systems. Where do I start trouble shooting? Is there a better way to fix this other than pulling the bulb? I'm trying to get her ready for a state inspection.
comancheman
I'm not positive but i believe that the emissions light comes on at a certain mileage. it doesnt mean something is neccesarily wrong its more of a recommendation to maybe change an O2 sensor. there is a clear box with small plastic gears inside it under the right side of the driverside dash where this "timer" is located you can probably reset it form the box but ive never done it. just putting some ideas out there
JeepcoMJ
there's a little clear gear box thingy somewhere under your dash...that's for the emissions light, and at a certain mileage it does come on. just yank it and scrap it. i'll take a pic of the one we took outta my bro's for you today
JohnQ
I took the little box out and the light went out. Do I need this to pass inspection?
JeepcoMJ
you shouldn't. i don't really know anything about inspections...we just have emissions and i've never had to have a vehicle inspected. Â it'll pass emissions without it provided everything mechanical is good.
Pete M
You could put it back and then pop out the bulb. :D That bulb isn't used for anything but the timer.
comancheman
you won't need it to pass emissions it doesnt have any effect on the motor or how it runs
Pete M
Some places have "inspections" rather than just the sniffer test and this might be something they look for. Don't know for sure. Michigan gave up on even the sniffer test years ago. :D
Eagle
I seriously doubt that any testing station would look for that thing, or even know what/where TO look. It isn't an emissions sensor and it isn't connected in any way to the emissions systems. As has been posted above, it's nothing more than a timer. It's calibrated to turn on the light after the number of ours that they figure an "average" vehicle will take to reach 80,000 miles, which is the recommended interval for replacing the oxygen sensor. If you pass the running test, your O2 sensor is okay so there's nothing to worry about.
