ChiefJosh
I'm currently running 31x10.50's on an 8" wide wheel, if I upgrade to 33x12.50's, can I run them on my current wheels, or should I try to go with 33x10.50's if I can? What are the pros and cons? When these go on, I'll be running SOA at about 6" lift, my current wheels I think are 3.75 backspacing.
pingpong
8" wide rims are fine for that, especially with the amount of back spacing you have. Helll I ran 35x12.5's on 8's before :brows:
Mitch
I am running 35X12.50X15 tires on 8" rims with 3.75 bs just fine on my TJ a little rubbing on the quick discos but nothing big. 8" rims are perfect for 33X12.50's Its the backspacing you want to measure. I wouldnt go to a 10" rim for 33's and I would consider using a 7" rim for 10.50's New tires excite me!

Mitch
yea but they'll wear funny care to explain?
JeepcoMJ
example; my bro's got 31x10.50's on his 7" wide rims on his truck. they're basically the same tires as mine (mine are on 8" rims), and were brand new. he's put about 5k more miles on than i have, and he drives nicer than i do, and his tires are worn to about 25%. mind you, that's after putting about 16000 miles on them. by putting something so wide on narrower rims, and running them at anything remotely normal in tire pressure, you are in a sense "pinching" them towards the center, and they end up havint a curved surface on the tread face, and their wear pattern, being curved, allows for less contact on the ground while doing normal driving, and more wear in specific areas (middle of tread) which ruins them. basically, they wear more if the tire is on something that's 3" narrower or more...even running 10.50's on my 8" rims, i'm not comfortable. i'd rather have 9 or 10" rims to evenly displace the weight on the tires so that more surface area is coming in contact rather than less. putting 12.50 anything on an 8" rim is okay if you don't regularly drive it on the road, and run lower tire pressure, but at normal pressures and simple daily driving, it will KILL the lifespan of your tires. Mitch
makes sense, hopefully I am not tearing mine up too bad.... Thanks for the explanation.
pingpong
Thats why they are only recommended tire pressures. You have to make sure you get a flat tread pattern, otherwise you will wear the center (over inflated) edges (underinflated)
Pete M
Your bro needs to check his alignment or his air pressure or switch to a different tire. 10.5s on a 7inch should work just fine. 12.5s on an 8inch should also work just fine. Both require that you figure out the ideal tire pressure for your specific tire/wheel combo and truck weight, but they should work just fine.
